VOCABULARY
  • taxonomy- The science of classifying organisms.
  • binomial nomenclature- The naming system of using genus and species names to refer to an organism established by Carolus Linnaeus.
  • phylogeny- The study of how organisms change over time.
  • eukaryotic- A cell with a nucleus.
  • prokaryotic- A cell without a nucleus.
  • kingdom- The largest and most general category in the classification system of organisms.
  • genus- A taxonomic group containing one or more species. Also, the first word in a scientific name in which the first letter is always capitalized.
  • species- The most specific category in the system of classification of organisms. Also the second word in a scientific name.
  • dichotomous key- A classification key that usually has two choices or divisions at each step. Dichotomous keys are based on an “either-or” classification system --either something has a certain characteristic, or it doesn’t.
  • autotrophic- Organisms that make their own food.
  • heterotrophic- Organisms that obtain food from other organisms (organic matter from external sources).
